Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are in the inner-city with about 90% of its students being economically disadvantaged. My first-grade classroom has 22 students; seven students have special needs and two students are English Language Learners. I have taught in this school for 22 years, and I can honestly say we have the best staff and students in the city!
We practice the Responsive Classroom, which is a teaching practice that fosters an appreciation for cultural diversity and social acceptance.
Our environment develops self-esteem, respect, and the power of learning for children and staff. Teachers and children are encouraged to pursue learning’s two most important components: curiosity and exploration. Our school provides a positive climate that builds each student’s self-esteem.
An important component of the Responsive Classroom is Morning Meeting. Every morning, my class comes together on the rug in a circle. We greet each other, a few students share, then we do a fun/academic activity and finally read the news and announcements.
My Project
First Graders learn so much in one year! I would love some new Language Arts games to use during the reading block to make their learning fun and engaging. The Sight Word Tower game will help reinforce the 100 sight words that the students need to know. I chose some other fun games like the Magnetic Blends, Build A Word and Synonym Match Up for the students to use during their independent group time. I plan to write the sight words on the craft sticks to make a sight word game called "Boink!". I'm always trying to find new ways to teach comprehension skills and the Match and Sort Comprehension Game looks like a great way for my paraprofessional to reteach these skills to students who may be struggling.
