My students are third through fifth-grade students in a culturally and economically diverse community. All of my students have autism spectrum disorders that require a specialized learning environment and materials. Within my classroom, I need to take into account noise levels, light filtering, smells, access to a break space, access to a variety of tactile activities, just to name a few. I also need to provide high-interest materials to keep the students engaged in learning. With limited classroom budgets, it is often difficult for the special education teacher to access these materials.
My Project
The students in my classroom are visual and tactile learners. Common core often makes it more difficult for students with Autism to fully grasp a new concept because they have to learn multiple methods to reach the same solution and then explain their thinking. This can be very difficult for children with communication difficulties and marvelous brains that compute efficiently and easily.
We would love to have a variety of reading and math games to teach the concepts of fractions, decimals and place value, as well as reading for detail, following directions and predictions.
These concrete concepts and easier to understand when you can see and feel them. It is also a lot of fun to learn while playing a game with a small group of peers.
