Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are wonderful kindergarteners in a Title 1 school where many of my classroom families are on free and reduced lunch, come from low-income homes and are English Learners. Approximately 50% of my students are from these underserved families. My calling, as their teacher, is to not only lay the foundation of learning within their minds, but to also maintain a clean, comfortable and healthy learning environment and that takes care of my precious students by meeting their daily needs.
My kindergarteners are learning in a classroom that is: kid-centered; filled with love; enhanced with hands-on learning; is kid-centric that promotes their future success though financial literacy, counting and sharing; encourages all students to make good decisions, show respect and solve problems with one another through positive reinforcement using classroom "dollars" to buy and spend on positive incentive "store" that celebrates our classroom community together.
My Project
How will my kindergarteners learn counting, financial literacy and positive reinforcement? I've been gradually sharing financial literacy within my kindergarten classroom. My students are learning to be in a positive and collaborative learning environment. My students are exploring what it means to show respect, make good decisions and solve problems with one another. These amazing five year olds are learning to work together in math (counting) during center time and during collaborative work time. Many of my students did not attend preschool and my kindergarten classroom is their first experience with other 5 and 6 year olds. Everything is new and exciting!
My students are learning to count during whole group time; to explore, play and collaborate during small group time and centers using number games and writing activities; to connect and grow through partner work.
They are rewarded with classroom "dollars" and a classroom "store" when they: demonstrate positive collaboration with one another, make good choices and solve problems with one another. This is truly a wonderful experience to count how much "money" they have earned and decided what incentive prize they wish to buy at our store. My students are learning to save their money to buy larger and more elaborate items---how fun is that?
I'm excited with the potential for my students to learn to count with paint, stickers, games and counters. I'm thrilled to make copies of my "Carnahan Cash" in brilliant astrobright colors. I love hearing the excitement in their voices when they are exposed to a new game or activity! Please help my kindergarten class become financially literate, engaged with new and fun activities and most especially to be ready for their future! Help me fund this ever important project.
