Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in a rural Indiana community. My students are part of the Dual Language Immersion program at my school, meaning they spend half of their day learning in English and half of their day fully immersed in a Spanish classroom. Forty-eight sweet first graders walk through my door every day! About 45% of the students at my school qualify as English Learners. My dual language classroom reflects that statistic, as 50% of my students come from homes that speak primarily English and 50% come from Spanish speaking homes.
My students come to school so excited to learn every day!
In my English classroom, we focus on becoming rock star readers. My students learn from reading fun, interesting books, as well as hands-on phonics activities that keep them engaged and focused. It is amazing how much they grow throughout the year!
My Project
My students will love using PlayStix as a new morning tub option! The academic demands even on first graders are high, and morning tubs are a wonderful way to give my students a time dedicated to interacting, building, and creative thinking.
My students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and I would love to have sets of crayons available for them to use so that they can see themselves and their families reflected in their creations!
The whisper phones would be a wonderful addition to my mini lessons during guided reading and fluency stations. Thank you for your consideration!
