I teach in a full day Kindergarten classroom, at a high-needs, Title I school, in Seattle, Washington.
Regardless of what is happening outside of school, my students show a love for learning and an eagerness to soak up as much knowledge as possible.
They approach every day with a real sense of anticipation and wonder.
The class is comprised of kind, considerate, and unique individuals who are at the first stage of their schooling. It is my job to help them maintain that uniqueness while adapting to the school environment. Five year olds often have a belief that they should know more than they do, so I try to create an environment that encourages students to recognize their anxiety when learning new things.
My Project
In these times we spend very little time interacting with each other. Kindergarten is the first opportunity for some students to have dramatic play materials. A key part of the day is when the students in my class pick from a list of activities (such as dramatic play, blocks, dollhouse etc.) and then spend time together making plans for what they are going to do in their area of choice.
As the year goes on their plans become more detailed as they gain confidence in their ability to be heard and listened to in a group.
They are learning from each other, sharing ideas, and becoming part of a respectful community. It is a time for the students to practice positive interactions in different scenarios with both their materials and their classmates.
