I teach 14-22 year old young adults with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments in our high school's Transition Program. My students are focusing their time in school on preparing for life after high school; that looks different for every student. We work with each student individually to help them communicate what their personal needs and wants are. Independence is something heavily implemented in our class, it motivates our students to be as self sufficient as possible after school.
My students also participate in jobs around our school building and in the community as part of their education.
We also practice cooking, cleaning, money, basic math, and functional writing skills.
Most of my students are looking forward to moving out of their parents' home, working, and being involved in their community when they finish school. Others are looking to continue their education in a college, vocational/trade training program, or adult transition program.
Creating a positive environment for learning will help my student grasp the concept of positive support norms. It is my hope that transition to higher education or an adult program will be easier and students will be able to adjust faster providing them positive experiences at school. While at school, my students will be using paints and and paint brushes as a means of self expression and sensory. My students will be able to receive an enhanced understanding of how money is used in a real world setting; by contributing to a classroom store (making purchases or being a cashier). The magnetic letters (upper and lower) 10’s frame, and the flashcards, Teachers Pay Teachers contributions will give me the materials I need to ensure foundations in literacy and basic mathematics. Thank you!
