Mrs. Bennett from Henrico VA is requesting Educational Kits & Games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students games, materials to transform my classroom, and props for students to bring excitement back into learning!
When someone asks where I teach, I proudly exclaim the name of my school and the response I always get is, "Oh, that is a wonderful school!" I have to agree and have called it home for the last thirteen years. I'm so lucky to be a part of this school community. It is an older campus-style school that is tucked away in a neighborhood, which makes it easy to miss; however, I and my local community consider it to be our hidden gem. What makes us so great? Our student population is very diverse. We have a variety of economic backgrounds, over 50 countries represented, and many students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. In addition, we have students who receive weekly food bags and school supplies from caring teachers and community members.
Our students' willingness to learn, our sense of community, and school pride is what holds us together and keeps us going.
Students and teachers at my school always have a smile on their face and make it a wonderful place to be!
I want to create a variety of environments in my classroom to get students engaged in learning. To do this I need materials that can transform my classroom into different themes and props for students. These materials can be incorporated into all subject areas. The construction materials will be used during reading and math. Students will put on their hard hats and vests and get to work investigating area and perimeter of shapes around the class "construction site." For reading, students will dig into reading passages and search for evidence to support their answers. The table clothes, chef hats, and trays will be used to create a reader's cafe where students will participate in a book tasting. Students will dress the part while skimming through a variety of genres to find books that interest them. The games, black lights, and glow sticks will transform the classroom into a glow party for math review. Students will be divided into groups and sent to a station where they will have to work together as a team to solve math problems. After solving one problem, students can shoot a hoop, throw a ring or bean bag, etc. to celebrate their success and motivate them to solve the next problem, all while donning glow sticks and working under black lights.
Students will be engaged and learning the entire time because academic and social skills have been disguised by games and props.
I can't wait to bring this project to life and see the excitement of learning in my students' faces. I have an amazing group of students this year and I know they will appreciate your support and belief in them.
