Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are bright, energetic, and ready to learn! Our school is a Title I school where 65% of the students are on free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
Many students in our community have been displaced because of Hurricane Harvey and are living with family members and are struggling financially and emotionally.
Over half of our 850 students are English language learners and in the Dual Language Program. In this program, students spend 50% of their time at school learning in English, and 50% of their time at school learning in Spanish.
Even with all of the obstacles, our school just received the distinction of being a No Excuses University School and we take pride in encouraging our students to plan and work toward continuing their education after High School!
My Project
Out students are part of a dual language program where they are learning in both English and Spanish. Our second language learners need many supports to help them write and speak in their second language. These beginning picture dictionaries will support them as they learn to speak and write in another language.
These dictionaries will help them learn vocabulary needed to communicate both orally and in written form.
The early chapter books from the Katie Woo Series and the Magic Tree House series will engage them as they learn to become more efficient readers. Lack of vocabulary is something that inhibits comprehension. These dictionaries will also help our students learn the meaning of an unknown word they come across when reading by connecting it to a word they already know in their first language.
