My combination kindergarten to eighth grade classes in a ALE (Alternative Learning Environment) are from a lower income area of our county. Many of my students have not had a good or rewarding experience in school. My classroom is their positive experience in their educational journey. Many of my students are kinesthetic learners and need to be moving during learning. We are a very diverse school with thirty-seven percent of our student body being minorities. All of these challenges make learning new concepts difficult for many of my students.
My class has a wide range of learning needs and I have seen an increase in the number of students who struggle greatly with the ability to focus.
My students are kind, inspiring, creative and kinesthetic learners. These are kids working to overcome some great obstacles and are very positive learners.
Although they face adversity, these kids push themselves, take risks in the classroom and try their best daily to learn as much as they can. I'm incredibly proud of them!
My Project
There are many ways kids learn each day and not all students learn the same way! Research has shown that kinesthetic learners need to move in order to learn. Unfortunately, schools are not set for these movers and shakers. We have two fifteen minute recess times which are used to get the wiggles out. The kinesthetic kids in my classroom need to move to keep their minds active. The Core Wobble Chair allows them to do slight movements without disrupting the class. These kids often get in trouble in class because they have the need to move.
A research study done in a Las Vegas school found that Wobble Chairs made a difference for students.
Researchers discovered a direct correlation between student participation and use of the wobble chair. Students who usually struggled with focus were more on task and completed more assignments. I want to allow these students to be successful with their modality of learning. Too many times, we teach the kinesthetic out of our learners.
Please help my students be successful learners. These Wobble chairs will help students move around in a way that will prevent them from distracting their classmates and getting into trouble. Instead, the chairs will keep these kinesthetic learners focused and engaged in their learning.
