Our school is a Title I magnet elementary school. We have students from various socioeconomic backgrounds. Our focus is the arts and problem solving. Our school encompasses grades K-5, and I teach all of them.
I am the problem solving teacher and serve all 705 students in the school including English language learners and students with special needs.
I teach up to five classes a day, which can be a kindergarten, first or second grade, third or fourth grade, and fifth grade class. That is a total of about 80 different children in one day.
My Project
At the beginning of this school year, my school was evacuated from our building due to extensive mold problems. We are currently housed on two floors of an office building. Although this sounds unconventional, we were thrilled that we could find a space where all 700+ students and 100+ faculty could stay together. We have settled in well but still have another school year in this alternative setting. I teach Problem Solving through Talents Unlimited lessons and the Engineering Design Process to all the students. These stools would allow my students who find being seated during direct instruction difficult, a safe place to move while they learn. Many of these students need this movement in order to focus and are actually more productive when learning in motion.
