Identifying the mystery. Analyzing suspects. Gathering clues. Dodging red herrings. This is the exciting work my third-grade students take on during our mystery reading unit. However, they are not just solving mysteries. . . they are learning important foundational skills in disguise!
Third grade is such an important year for students, as they transition from learning to read, to learning from reading.
We are located in a brand new school with a wish list of basic needs. My students are excited and motivated by reading mysteries and need more access to good books that help them develop basic skills, such as following ideas across texts, seeing cause and effect relationships, making predictions and inferences, and much more!
My Project
Each day, my third-graders are reading for 30-45 minutes at a time and need lots of books to help independently practice skills taught during the lessons. These materials will make a difference in my student's learning by providing them with exciting, high-interest texts that support the lessons taught during our mystery unit in reading workshop time.
Third graders are finishing several books per week, so acquiring these titles will give my students access to a variety of mysteries at their just right reading level.
Titles such as The Clubhouse Mysteries, Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew, Doyle and Fossey Science Detectives, Milo and Jazz Mysteries, Nate the Great, and Young Cam Jansen have been requested in pairs as students will read alongside their reading partners, collaborating and supporting each other as they read through the stories and solve the mysteries.
