Help me give my students a space to work in comfort as they complete projects in small groups and enjoy literacy games in a developmental appropriate way.
My students are growing and learning in a small, tight knit, school community that allows them to each have a strong voice. They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners. They are mini inspirations to themselves and others around them, even if they don't know it yet. They are world travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, doctors, engineers, teachers... They are our future, and I want to give them the best start that I can to a successful life.
Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives.
Our school serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. Vermont small schools are taking a hit when it comes to budgets. Our classroom budget has been reduced to less than $200. It is becoming harder and harder to purchase items for the classroom that would benefit the needs of all of the students.
Opportunities through DonorsChoose.org have the potential to make great things happen in my classroom. Thank you!
My Project
Comfortable seating allows students to take charge of their learning and focus on their task at hand. During independent work time as well as small group work time students need a space where they can sit face to face and work together. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting in Big Joe chairs with clip boards, sitting at high top tables with ball chairs, and sitting in a standard chair at a desk or table. Some students even prefer a standing desk option. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they have a variety of options available to them. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more group areas available for working in comfort in our classroom.
The stadium seats can also be used as an alternative chair at various locations in the classroom if needed. The table will be a nice addition to the tables that are already in our classroom and will allow students the option to be low to the ground which fourth graders prefer especially when working together. The literacy game will be a nice addition to our small group work during literature circles as enrichment to the skills being taught.
I have seen already how comfort and space design can have a tremendous impact on the motivation of students when it comes to learning in the classroom and look forward to how these additional items will help us grow!
