Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are considered At-Risk pupils. They run the gamut of markers that put their ability to complete their education at a frighteningly low probability. Just last year, I had students with ADD, ADHD, parents that are incarcerated or deceased, siblings that were killed, pregnancy scares, homelessness, medical issues, living in poverty, immigration situations, and suffering from educational neglect. With all that you would think that they would be hopeless, but I have found that my kids have hopes and dreams. They simply lack guidance which I try my darndest to provide and simple resources that more affluent students take for granted. I have had the honor of watching them work hard with what little they have and always striving to succeed if not for themselves then for me! They are a gift and that’s why I have spent my entire career working with At-Risk kids.

Note-taking in color turns the verbal into an impactful visual. Being able to be creative has two sets of benefits for the learner. The first is an external benefit: when you use multiple colors while taking notes, you’re adding contrast to the page, and that contrast is a huge aide to the eye when you look back on that set of ideas.
Color helps you to break up the page so that it can be more quickly and easily interpreted by whoever is looking at it, whether that be you in the future or someone you’re sharing your ideas with.
The second is more of an internal benefit, and it occurs during the note-taking process itself: the consistent use of multiple colors anchors the rest of your note-taking process. It provides structure to the note-taking experience that wouldn’t normally be there.
I hope to bring more engagement to Cornell notes, outlines, doodle notes, and mathematical processes/structures. I also hope to keep students from taking my pens because they have their own (a societal norm among students trying to do without).
