My students are a diverse group of incredibly bright, energetic children with a thirst for knowledge and a love for school. We are a title one school, just feet from government housing, where 78% of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. On a daily basis, the majority of my school's students face challenges beyond what many could ever imagine, but they all persevere. They look to school as an escape from their daily worries and bask in the world where they are nurtured and developed as individuals, citizens of their community and lifelong learners. At school they are given opportunities and exposures to books, technology, and an education that they would never receive at home. Over 120 of our students voluntarily spend an extra 3 hours a day at school just to receive extra help and enrichment. Our motto at school is children first, and we really live by this.
My Project
Students today live in a vivid, colorful world, unfortunately the minute they get a handout to study or read from, it's always in black and white and boring. With a color printer, I can help my students see beyond the black and white print or illustration and explore the context in front of them with enthusiasm and excitement. A color printer will not only bring text and illustrations to life, but it will motivate my students to become more engaged in their work.
I teach an inclusion class and in order to meet the needs of all my students I rely on different strategies; which are all enhanced when they include color.
In reading, my visual learners need to see the color of text to see the differences in keywords and text boxes. My students with dyslexia, need to read in a different colored text so their letters don't get mixed up. In math, all my students need to see what fraction is actually shaded blue not just shaded a different shade of grey. In writing, my students need to see all the small details of their mentor text or illustration to describe and bring their writing to life. My special needs students rely heavily on visual aids, and they need them to be in color to fully comprehend their meaning. Color is important in all aspects of life and my students need to see it in their classroom materials.
