Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Imagine a school environment in which politeness, kindness, and respect are the rule and not the exception. Visualize a school where students feel safe and look forward to learning and achieving their maximum potential. The students at my school are working on "Learning in a Bully-Free Zone".

Bullying is a frequent and serious problem in our schools.

One in six students is regularly bullied. My school is a Title I School - which means that we have a large population of students who are from a low socioeconomic background. Although my students are from a low socioeconomic background - with high expectations and the belief that all children can learn - the students at my school have made "Adequate Yearly Progress" for the last seven years under "No Child Left Behind". The challenge that I face is that when students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds, their interpersonal skills sometimes reflect the behaviors that they see modeled in their "at risk" neighborhoods. The goal of "Learning in a Bully Free Zone" is to teach students the skills to deal with bullies, as well as promote positive social skills such as cooperation, communication, and conflict resolution. The ultimate goal is to create a school with a zero tolerance for violence and bullying.

My Project

The materials requested for "Learning in a Bully-Free Zone" will actively engage students in the learning process. Students learn by doing and during the bullying prevention unit "Jeff''s Journey" will bring the issues around bullying behaviors to life in the classroom with 12 dramatic episodes or reader's theater performances. "Bully Free Zone in a Jar" will help students learn what to do if they have a bully problem - whether they are the target, the bystander, or the bully. Finally, the game, "Bullies, Victims, and Bystanders will raise students' awareness of bullying, allow students to see how harmful bullying behavior is, and encourage students to model good behavior. Students will learn kindness, respect, tolerance for individuals, and be able to learn in a bully free zone.

One of the correlates of an effective school is a safe environment for students to learn.

Students should look forward to coming to school and have positive memories of school. Memories of school should not include physical and/or emotional scars from bullying. "Learning in a Bully Free Zone" will promote positive social skills such as cooperation, communication, and conflict resolution. The school climate will become the healthy, safe place for learning that each student deserves
