My Students

The heart of my classroom is my students. I am a Certified Reading Specialist and English as a Second Language Teacher who works with language learners who are new to the country or second generation immigrants. I also work with Kindergarten-2nd Grade students needing literacy intervention and enrichment services.

My incredibly talented and smart students are in grades K-2, speak several languages, and represent the diversity in our country.

They speak English, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, German, and Chinese. Some of my students traveled on foot with their parents from different regions in Central America in order to attend school in the United States. They are seen in 45 minute-1 hour groups during pull-out intervention and enrichment blocks for RTI and ESL classes. They love learning to read, engaging in STEAM activities, and showing their creativity like the famous artists that we study. More time spent engaged with enjoyable literacy tasks matched to their developmental needs is key to their success.

My Project

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts defines arts integration as "an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form". Using children's literature for famous artists and science topics, my students have been able to utilize the various reading strategies they are being taught in differentiated reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking tasks. They are able to demonstrate their learning by creating their own masterpieces in the style of the artists that we are studying and writing about their thinking throughout the process as they develop literacy skills.

As a Reading Specialist and an ESL Teacher in a Title I School, I work with students who often come to school with limited English exposure or who are working to overcome reading deficits due to limited background building experiences.

By using high-quality children's literature about famous artists and reproductions of their artwork, I am striving to help my students develop the thinking skills that the next generation standards ask of them. The work that I have been doing with my students involving art integrated STREAM lessons has helped me grow as much as a teacher as my students have grown as learners.

This project will give me professional development texts and children's books for my classroom library that will be used to help me complete program requirements for the Arts Integration Specialist Certification Program through Education Closet. These resources will also help me plan art integrated lessons for my striving K-2 readers, develop professional development for all of the teachers in my school, and add needed children's books to my classroom library.
