Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am high school Spanish teacher and I have been for 13 years. These past couple of years I have been fortunate enough to be chosen as a teacher for our Spanish for Native Speakers program. In this program I teach both Native and Heritage speakers of the Spanish.
This new program has created both challenges and amazing opportunities, as I am now teaching my students how to read and write academically in their native Spanish language.
The majority of my students come from a lower socioeconomic status and have not received any formal instruction in Spanish, so this program gives them the opportunity to advance their learning and prepare them for potential Advanced Placement courses.
My Project
My students have been slowly discovering the joy of reading in their native language. Although I have access to PDF versions of many things, I find that my students benefit the most from having a book in their hands that they can manipulate and read both in the classroom and at home.
In order to truly teach them how to read and love literature in Spanish, I need actual books for them to check out.
La casa en Mango Street is a novel that can be easily read and students can easily relate to the main character, Esperanza. After reading, we will analyze and produce our own childhood experience in Spanish.
