Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My high school is a high needs CTE high school located in Brooklyn, New York. My students are looking to improve academically and take part in many service learning projects. From running canned food drives for City Harvest, adopting local parks for clean ups, participating in Wreaths Across America, and taking part in historic study projects. My school has done extremely well and the students enjoy their time as students and also enjoy taking part in activities outside of school.

My Project

In collaboration with local law enforcement, my students will assemble book exchange boxes “Little Free Libraries” and place them throughout the community including community gardens and police precincts. This will be a unique, impactful literacy project that will focus on education, service-learning, community safety and community building. Career Technical Education students will collaborate with local law enforcement and build the Little Free Libraries and place books in them so that access to reading will increase in communities that need it most.

The teachers will gain an understanding of Financial Literacy because local marketing and advertising organizations will be brought in to teach about how to make best use of these book exchange boxes.
