Learning How to Enjoy Reading!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"What else do you have for me to read?" is a question I receive often from my students. I make it a priority to read, purchase, and share high-interest novels with my students who do not have access to these types of books. Too many of my students have never learned the pleasures of reading because the only books available to them are the ones assigned through our curriculum.

My students are from an economically disadvantaged town and 86% of them qualify for free or reduced lunches.

Unfortunately, our school library is lacking and students do not have the resources to purchase their own books. Many of them want to read more but just cannot afford the hobby.

My Project

Many of my students have a desire to read outside of what is assigned through the curriculum. Over the years, I have purchased many young adult novels and shared my own love of reading with my students. Fortunately, the number of students looking for books has increased over the years but my classroom library has not.

We do not have a school library so students look to their teachers for new and exciting reads!

With the books on this project list, many of my students will have the opportunity to journey to peculiar worlds, understand the difficulties of growing up, and find solace that they are not alone in their life's challenges.

This list was student created using what they are already reading and what they would like to read. As of now, I have one copy of "Miss Peregrine" in my classroom library and the list to borrow it is already half a page! It is my hope that more copies will create more readers!
