I have a wonderful group of 5th graders that love to learn, create, and engage with their classmates. Our school is where half of our students receive a free lunch.
Their parents want to provide the best opportunities and materials for them; however, most of them can only provide the basic necessities.
By reaching out to you, I am hoping I can provide quality materials that otherwise would be unavailable to them. I am hoping you will partner with my students and help provide these materials.
My Project
My fifth grade students favorite part of the school day is when we read aloud from fun and engaging novels. Imagine taking a journey back in time and learning what it was like to live during the Civil Rights movement, the Second World War, the Depression Era or the Revolutionary War. While reading novels like "Esperanza Rising," "Sophia's War," "Number the Stars," and "The War that Saved My Life" my students will understand what others have endured in their lives during these times and how the characters found their inner strength and courage to face even the most insurmountable conflicts that arise in these stories.
Students have a tendency to get much more involved reading a novel than they do reading a short story from a textbook; and learning is greatly increased!
Studying these novels will allow my students to connect on a deeper level with the characters, themes, conflicts, plots, sequence of events and exposes them to historical fiction, perhaps for the first time!
The Kagen Cooperative Learning books, timer and copy paper will be used in conjunction with the novels and teach my students how to work with others in small groups as they complete various assignments in fun and engaging ways.
