Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are driven and eager to learn. As a result of Hurricane Maria we have received an influx of displaced English language learners striving to grasp onto a second language as well as keep up with Florida standards mid way through the year. My newest students are eager to participate, volunteer answers in both languages, to the best of their ability, and try their best to read materials for comprehension. Because bilingual support is strained since the influx and it is my responsibility to provide them the materials they need to be independently successful.
We are a K to 5th grade Title I elementary school with 400+ children, and we are receiving students regularly from Puerto Rico.
All students receive free breakfast and lunch. We have several before and after-school tutoring programs and are a community engaged school with several parental involvement and community outreach programs. Our students' families struggle financially, but everyone is dedicated to helping our parents provide for their children.
My Project
My students have been striving to reach their Accelerated Reader goals by reading books in class and taking comprehension quizzes online. However, since our class size has grown students aren't always able to get online to take their quiz because computers are limited.
These Chromebooks will allow more students to take Accelerated Reader comprehension quizzes at the same time as well as provide access to translated material online.
The Accelerated Reader program sets individual goals for each student based on their diagnostic test. With these Chromebooks students will be able to track their progress and achieve confidence through setting and achieving goals. These fun math center activities will also support my students impacted by Hurricane Maria by allowing them access to interactive games that are standards based.
