This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a specialized school for my students who have various forms of Emotional Disturbances and Learning Disabilities, my students come from neighborhoods throughout our city, and even commuting from several miles away. With various forms of emotional disturbances, my students can easily become disenchanted with school and often look for extra reasons to come to school. After asking numerous times what can change their outlook on school, my students responded that if they had something to take care of early in the morning before classes, it would encourage their early, or even on time arrival for school. After these suggestions were made, the solution was simple, creating a time to monitor life cycles of fish during our regular classes! Together with these supplies, my students will have a hands-on learning experience that they will love, and desire to encourage them to come to school daily!
My Project
While my students are diagnosed with varying forms of Emotional Disturbances, they still take part in the general education curriculum. A key component of their instruction in science is understanding how a life cycle manifests, as well as how an ecosystem interacts. This project will provide my students with access to materials to engineer and cultivate a living ecosystem and document its growth. While it may seem like this is just a fish tank and plant growing system, it will allow my students to record daily progress, compare how a plant grows when watered with/without water from the fish tank, and chart the growth related to each. What better way to introduce our students to the biology curriculum and skills needed to take the New York State Regents than by having a time set aside each morning for them to take care of their ecosystem. By creating student ownership as well as providing them with the latest and greatest materials, our students will become science ambassadors to the whole school and will create a science related buzz throughout our school that our school has never experienced before! Together we can help our students create this ecosystem!
