In the 11 years I have taught, I can say that every group of 1st grade students has been special. I have the privilege of witnessing kids learn to read, which makes my job amazing. I teach an average of 20 students each school year in a very low-income, rural area of our state. Majority of our little ones have to ride on a school bus for at least 45 minutes to get to school. We have a high percentage of students that are enrolled in our free or reduced lunch program.
My 1st graders rotate through reading and spelling stations everyday. During the different stations my students do activities like read to self, word work, meet with teacher, and iPad work. When a student is at read to self they take their own book box filled with books on their level to practice reading. The book boxes we are using are very old and are falling apart. I am asking for new sturdier book boxes for my students to use at this station. Another station they do is word work which is everyone's favorite. Students work on a set of words for spelling or reading in many different ways. I am hoping to add a few more options for this station. They enjoy this station because they get to to use hands on items to build the words. One of the items I am asking for are beads with letters that students can string to make words. Thank you in advance for helping with my learning stations.
