My Project

My high school students will be traveling to Topaz Mountain Internment Camp Museum and studying in class about what happened to Japanese American citizens during World War 2. There are so many current issues that Americans face. Looking at past mistakes can help us learn how to navigate the difficult times of today.

My students will be learning about how important it is to accept people and their cultures without the expectation of conforming to an "ideal" of what makes an American.

The Japanese Americans that were detained during World War 2 are an example of how America failed. People that were not committing crimes, acts of espionage, or other aggression toward the country they called home, were forced into internment camps. Racism drove this action.

Students will be learning about the past to help them with their future. We will build models of the Topaz Mountain Internment Camp using LEGO and read a graphic novel called They Called Us Enemy.
