Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

These nonfiction books will help bring historical events and influential people to life for my English 9 and 10 students. By reading engaging nonfiction texts in literature circle groups, students will strengthen critical reading, discussion, and analytical thinking skills while also building historical knowledge and empathy. The variety of texts will allow students to explore different perspectives, time periods, and experiences in a more personal and engaging way.

My students are curious, creative, and eager to connect what they learn in English class to the real world around them.

Many of them learn best when they can see history come alive through personal stories, powerful events, and real experiences rather than only reading from a textbook. They enjoy opportunities to collaborate with their classmates, discuss ideas, and explore topics that feel meaningful and relevant to their lives.

Students will work together in small groups to read and discuss the books while completing a mixture of daily discussion roles, collaborative activities, and individual projects. These resources will encourage teamwork, accountability, and deeper conversations while helping students practice important literacy skills such as citing evidence, analyzing themes, summarizing information, and presenting ideas clearly. Most importantly, these books will help students see that reading can connect them to real people, real struggles, and real triumphs beyond the classroom.
