My first-grade students are eager to learn despite the many hardships they may come from. Our classroom has both students from general education as well as students with special needs. Their academic ability ranges from non-readers to fluent readers. They love to use technology when its available and hands on materials and are excited to learn.
Our school serves students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and sits in the heart of an urban city.
One hundred percent of our children receive a free breakfast and lunch. In addition, we serve several families who are homeless. Many of my students have never left our city. Despite many of their parents not having graduated from high school, they want their children to do well and be successful in school. They ask for ways to support their children at home and at school.
My Project
My classroom has 4 desktop computers and 25 busy first graders. We work closely together with the neighboring teacher who has a similar classroom. Throughout our day we try and use centers to keep students on task and working individually on specific tasks while the teacher is pulling small groups of children. There are wonderful apps that can be used to allow children to listen to good reading, practice math fluency or make their own books!
However, with the ratio of 1 computer for every 5 students, my students do not have access to the technology they could be using.
These chromebooks will allow the students to do this. The students are engaged and working at their own levels and no one is aware that some are working below grade level, some on and others above.
