Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our middle school has just over 700 students that attend each day. They come from a variety of backgrounds with many different experiences. 51% are of Hispanic background, 19% are Asian, 17% are white, 6% Pacific Islander and 6% Black. Our students come with many challenges to our classrooms. For instance, 68% are English Language Learners while 10% are considered Migrant and 78% qualify for free and reduced lunch. While our students have significantly high needs, they are a joy to work with and deserve nothing short of the best we can offer them!
My Project
The Standards Institute is a unique and transformative professional learning experience grounded in the intersection of high standards, grade-level content, aligned curriculum, and equitable instructional practices. Participants leave the Standards Institute with practical strategies that can improve instructional practice and leadership in schools and systems.
We will have opportunities to engage in in-depth and hands-on learning experiences develop an understanding of the standards for both ELA and math: recognizing what they look like in a classroom setting, matching instructional strategies appropriately, and developing teachers’ capacity to plan and deliver standards-aligned equitable instruction.
It will be great to come back to the district as a team next year and share our learning with my grade-level colleagues. My students will benefit from me attending this institute because during my time at this institute I will learn how to use quality instructional materials to help my students achieve at higher levels with the expectation that they acquire grade-level skills even though they often come to us behind their peers academically.
