Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the first Dual Language Immersion class ever in our community. I have a mix of students who speak only Spanish, bilingual students, and students who speak only English. They are in my classroom for two reasons: to learn Kindergarten Standards, and to learn Spanish and English simultaneously. One day, they will earn their Certificate of Biliteracy. Currently, they are taught Spanish 90% of the day, and English only 10% of the day. They are so cute as they help each other to learn to speak Spanish.
I have students from many different types of backgrounds.
Our school is in an underprivileged community, and most of my students reside in it. Many are impoverished and have parents that are forced to work multiple jobs or are living in homes with multiple families. However, I also have students who come from outside of the community. They travel from afar to receive the opportunity to learn Spanish, and they may not be as underprivileged as their peers.
The program drew much enthusiasm, and there were many applicants. My students are the chosen few, and they are doing an excellent job of proving to the world that Dual Language Immersion.
My Project
I want to start teaching my students about financial literacy and money concepts through hands-on dramatic play in my classroom.
I have a place in my class that I want to turn into a dramatic play area filled with a pretend restaurant and grocery store...this way, students can learn more about financial literacy through hands on activities.
Currently, the place where I want to become a dramatic area is being used as a space for our backpacks. I am requesting a backpack cart to help take our backpacks outside for safe keeping. The backpack cart will open up the space we need to create a restaurant/grocery store inside the classroom. This new financial literacy area will allow students to learn about financial literacy through shopping, supply and demand, wants and needs. I am also requesting a working cash register to help enhance the pretend play shopping and dining experience in our classroom.
