Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Academic qualifications are important and so is financial education. They're both important and schools are forgetting one of them." Robert Kiyosaki
My school is located in the community of South Central Los Angeles.
We are the home of the Lions where we always say, "Never, Never Give Up." I have 31 wonderful students that come to school ready to work and do their best. Our class logo is "Dedication - Hard Work." They come with a very diverse range of home structures: nuclear, single parent, foster and migrant, to name a few. My students love to be at school and enjoy learning, especially when the activities involve STEM. Many of them are already planning to become engineers, scientists, mathematicians, etc.
My Project
My students need a Laptop computer to help educate my students about financial literacy. In the beginning of the year my students began to apply for jobs in class such as pet monitor, line leaders, bankers, etc. They were getting paid with play money and began to collect salaries. This allowed me to educate them on the importance of applying and getting a job. Then I asked them to deposit their earnings in class bank so they can learn about saving and investing their money through banks. I would use the computer for my students to create their own spreadsheet in Excel to manage their playing money in their bank accounts. I would like to have the MacBook Pro so they can play Stock-Market games online to learn the basics of financial literacy. They can log on, research potential investments and try to learn about the markets and economic news. It would be a great tool where students can learn online how to be financial responsible.
Having the MacBook Pro would be such a powerful addition to our financial literacy program.
I really believe that by preparing my students for the future through financial literacy, they will be far more prepared for higher education and today's workforce. This technology would make such a difference to our students and would motivate them to follow more financial projects.
