Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I feel so fortunate to have the privilege of being a Dual Language Immersion teacher at an incredible elementary school in California. Our school offers a unique two-way immersion program with the goal of fostering children’s development of fluency in communication and literacy in two languages, English and Spanish. I am thrilled to be part of this two-way immersion program and believe strongly in its goals. My students are amazing! They are learning to read, write, speak, and listen in both Spanish and English, as well as reaching for mastery of all academic content standards, including math and science.
We value our students and their families and stress the importance of building community and appreciating differences in culture.
My class is comprised of English Language Learners and students learning to speak Spanish for the first time. My students enjoy working together and helping each other become more proficient in their new language. I love seeing my students turn to each other and ask “Como se dice…” or “How do you say...” because that shows me they are building relationships and learning together!
My Project
It is never too early to learn about financial literacy! My students are building their knowledge of early math concepts such as counting, addition, subtraction and number recognition. A strong foundation in these skills will ensure they are ready to learn all about financial literacy. Thanks to a past DonorsChoose.org project, we received a cash register machine to help transform our dramatic play area.
I would like to continue transforming our dramatic play area to keep my students excited about practicing math and literacy skills.
The smoothie and cookie play sets will make great additions to our classroom. Students will be practicing counting, addition, subtraction, as well as literacy skills like reading, writing, and speaking as they pretend to take orders and engage with their peers. Students can use one of our puppets that will now be stored on a puppet stand for easy access if they choose or simply be themselves as they learn in our dramatic play area. The laminating sheets will be used to create menus and signs to go with each theme. The sand timers will help students keep track of time and take turns using the new materials without my help. Continuing to transforming our play kitchen into a variety of real-life themes will be a great way for students to practice financial literacy skills while having fun. They will be having so much fun, they won't even realize they are learning!
My students will be practicing important math skills they need to master in order to expand their knowledge of financial literacy in a hands-on and engaging way while having fun. I want all my students to gain a love for learning! Help me instill in my students a love for learning through this project!
