My students often chant at assemblies and as they walk through the hallways.
I look at them with my head tilted sideways since I did not even teach them that saying. They love being in TK or Transitional Kindergarten, and they love each other. I often joke that my class is very "kumbaya" since they all adore and respect each other so much. It's hard to tell sometimes what surrounds our school.
I teach at a Title I school in Sacramento where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students come from homes with very little to give besides love. Despite these challenges, my students are eager to learn and do their best. Their huge smiling faces as they chant do not indicate what struggles they have at home. They love being together and the community we have created in our room.
My Project
We are so lucky that we recently got a mini grocery store funded to help teach students about financial literacy through pretend play. I am now seeking to add more engaging items such as wooden play food, a wooden vacuum cleaner and a beauty shop play set to continue this learning. How do we teach financial literacy in pre-k? It's easier than you think.
We need to start with the basics, and I want my students experience earning and spending money.
This project request is for items to build experiences with real life items which require spending, earning and getting money. Students will be able to use play money we have in the classroom to practice the exchange of money or earning money to learn what different money values mean.
I want them to learn the value of earning money and the responsibility of spending money wisely. Students will be able to go to the grocery store and buy items or even go to the hair dresser and get their makeup done! The students will also be able to set up a cleaning business and go and clean areas of the classroom to earn money. Perhaps they will run a pizza shop and will sell pizza slices or ice cream scoops to students. Whatever the students dream up, they will be able to do with these new items. They will learn so many life lessons with our new supplies.
