Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A young woman who doesn't speak proper English, a linguistics professor who bets he can change her form of speech, and an unlikely love story. These scenarios, taken from George Bernard Shaw's play, Pygmalion, offer timely and thoughtful advice on understanding money.
For my students, most of whom come from low-income households, these financial lessons become especially important as they begin planning for their future educational experiences and careers.
While all students in my school take multiple mathematics courses, none of these classes help prepare them specifically for a life of financial responsibilities.
My Project
For this project, I am requesting copies of George Bernard Shaw's play, Pygmalion, which offers insightful and topical financial lessons. While reading the play, students will research financial issues that appear in the text (issues Eliza and her father face, such as saving, spending, and debt) and then relate them to practices used today. The play, for example, emphasizes the idea of saving and creating a sense of financial security. Students will research what that meant when the play was written in 1912, and what financial security means -- and how it can be obtained-- today. Through Socratic Seminars, students will present their research and lead class discussions not only on the issues of money and social class in the play, but also on practices used today to ensure financial stability.
By analyzing early 20th century literature, students will learn to extract financial lessons about saving, spending, debt, and that can help them understand money and make smart decisions throughout their lives.
