Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am working at a wonderful, but underfunded district school in the Bronx. Many of my students get a lot of their basic needs met at school. For example, the whole school qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my students are living in apartments with 6 people in a two-bedroom house. They are working on remote learning from their apartment in the Bronx. They have been able to secure access to technology but are still lacking other supplies we are usually able to provide for them at school.
Our students are extremely hard-working, and I have seen this school create a community that feels like an extended family.
Now that students are working from home I want to extend that familial love to students even though I cannot see them in person.
My Project
One family our school serves is currently living with 4 people in a one-bedroom apartment. This family has 3 school-aged children, all working to accomplish online learning. Their mother is an essential worker and is working hard to make sure her kids have all they need, but things are hard right now.
This family would really benefit from some extra food, books, games, and resources.
Having these supplies will help keep them feeling nourished and cared for while they are learning from home. Knowing that there is support for families who are struggling during this challenging time will help my students see light and grace during this global epidemic.
