Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students are English Language Learners and they make tremendous gains in both social and academic English over the course of the school year. I offer designated instruction in English Language Development during the school day. Much of this time is spent building academic vocabulary and developing social competence in English.
English Language Learners face language obstacles in the academic setting.
By offering a positive and supportive language learning environment, my students thrive alongside their peers. All students in my class have the opportunity to learn to their greatest potential. Why not give them the opportunity to learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics?
My Project
The collection of STEM books will help English Learners in my class gain the contextual vocabulary necessary for observation, experimentation and academic discussion. Our exploration into Next Generation Science Standards will be reinforced in designated English Language Development lessons.
Essential background knowledge will be introduced to English Language Learners through the images and text in the carefully selected STEM books.
The engaging information of each book will be highlighted in instruction and reviewed through independent reading initiatives. By using the rich vocabulary and images in each book to supplement language instruction, my English Language Learners will become competent students in science and mathematics alongside their English speaking peers.
