My students are recent arrivals to the United States. Many of them have overcome hardship to get here and are thrilled to be attending our high school.
Coming to the United States as a teenager and entering school when you don't know the language of instruction is difficult and stressful, yet my students arrive everyday with smiles on their faces, eager to learn.
They are strong and positive, kind and respectful, and are always ready to lend a hand.
Working with these students is an honor and a joy.
My Project
Imagine what's it like to attend high school when you don't speak English. Imagine not being able to communicate with other students or your teachers or not being able to fully understand your math, science, history, and language arts classes because you don't understand English. It is lonely and exhausting.
By donating to my project you will help my students learn English quickly, so they can connect with their classmates and be successful in their coursework.
Our English language department has found a wonderful textbook series that has five levels from beginner to advanced. I am so excited about this series because each level has fascinating reading and listening passages that emphasize distinct academic language skills. It will be a wonderful tool for our English language teachers to build from in the ESL classroom.
We have piloted three lessons and are thrilled to see how engaged the students are with this highly academic material. The lessons provided fascinating content that led to rich discussions and written responses in which students actively used new vocabulary and language structures. Because the listening, reading, writing, and speaking materials all cover different aspects of the same topic, our students rapidly internalized the new language and started using it as their own. We feel confident that this textbook series will help our students move through the different levels of English as fast as possible.
Our students have the dream of graduating high school and pursuing college or career training. These excellent textbooks will help them learn the English language skills they need to make it happen!
