My Students
My students come from all over the world. They are all recent immigrants to the United States who are now facing the toughest years of schooling in a new language. My students struggle with academic content because of the challenge of learning a new language and academic content in that new language at the same time. I teach refugees and asylum seekers from Nepal, Burma, Central America, Syria and Congo to name a few places. They love to learn, and are appreciative of their opportunities in the United States.
My Project
My students are learning English. It can be a daunting task to come to America at fourteen and be thrown into a world of a language that you do not speak fluently. Some of my students may be fourteen, new to the country, but have never entered a school a day in their life. Or maybe, they only made it to second grade because it was too dangerous to go to school in their country and/or their parents didn’t have the money to send them! My students take these challenges in stride as they are happy to be in this land of opportunity. They are safe, and ready to learn.
The speed at which these students are expected to learn English is challenging for them, but I am amazed every year at how these teenagers do it so quickly.
These kids use their English skills to better themselves, and to become advocates for their families.
I am hoping to use my project to purchase games that help facilitate language learning in a fun way. These games will build speaking and writing skills for the students. I would also like to purchase headphones that can be used for computer English acquisition programs. The games and computer programs can be modified to focus on targeted areas which emphasize all of their skills they need to learn English: reading, and writing, listening, and speaking.
