Imagine moving to a new country and learning to read and write a new language! This is the case for many of my ESL, or English as a Second Language, students.
I teach third grade English language learners.
This means that their native language is something besides English, mostly Spanish and Vietnamese. My students are eager to learn and try very hard in class. Some of my students have been in the United States for less than a year. We are a public school with the majority of our students on free and reduced lunch.
My Project
My students are fortunate to have access to an interactive whiteboard. They also love when learning is fun. I have selected software learning games for my students to use on the interactive whiteboard. This allows several students or the entire class to participate at once, instead of 1 or 2 students playing a game on a laptop. These games are specifically designed for increasing their English language skills. I have also asked for additional English/Spanish picture dictionaries in this project. These are extremely beneficial for students to begin writing on their own.
I want all of my students to be proficient in English and successful in school.
Research shows that ESL students who have a high rate of proficiency by middle school, are more likely to graduate and continue their education.
