Help me give my students language building tools designed to specifically support English Language Learners with pictures, color-coding, and targeted vocabulary such as the Activity Card set and Photo Library from Lakeshore.
This year, I started a new teaching chapter as an Intervention Specialist in a new school in a new district! My primary role is supporting students' individual needs to improve their academic outcomes through targeted, small group instruction. My students are energetic, eager kids who are ready to learn!
I want to provide them with a rich, engaging and exciting classroom and hands-on content to keep them intrigued and loving school.
I work with students from kindergarten through fifth grade, so their needs vary greatly. I'm working to create a welcoming environment with a library of engaging resources for some of our school's highest needs students.
These are resources specifically selected to support the needs of our school's growing English Learner (EL) population. Our school is now over one-fourth ELs, and they have additional needs beyond the grade level content teachers must help them master. They need resources designed with them in mind in order to master the complex English language and become proficient speakers, readers, and writers!
Our students speak over 25 native languages, so finding materials that include pictures, color-coded tools, scaffolded supports, and self-checking activities are important to make their language-learning time meaningful.
Teachers integrate certain strategies into their instruction to support their English Learners, but these students also receive additional support during the day to ensure their language needs are met. Our curriculum for this time is not always sufficient, and the resources selected for this project will provide additional ways for students to practice and apply their language development.
The photo library and sight word sentences will help our newcomers who have very limited English and need support building key vocabulary to effectively communicate at school. The grammar-based activities will help students that have basic vocabulary but need to fine-tune their English usage - something that is challenging even for native English speakers! The list books will be resources for teachers to use to build upon and expand their lessons with targeted vocabulary for our ELs.
Learning English is no easy task. At times it can be dull and tedious. It's important to have a variety of activities to keep students engaged while also giving them quality materials that support their learning. These resources will help make our ELD time a little more exciting and easier to differentiate for various levels!
