Learning Engineering with K'Nex and Legos!

My students need K'Nex and Legos to be able to think creatively while building innovative designs.

My Students

Remember playing with Legos as a kid, or watching your own kids build innovative structures with K'Nex? Imagine kids who have either never had these experiences, or young girls who were not encouraged to be engineers and technologists.

My young scientists are a very diverse group of learners.

When given the choice between free play or a structured art or science lesson, they invariably choose the play. I have witnessed my students, when left to their own imaginations, develop very creative designs. Additionally, my students freely admit that their free time at home often includes copious amounts of time playing video games instead of exploring and growing ideas.

My Project

I envision the Legos and K'Nex systems to be a part of my students' daily and weekly learning through active engagement in designing and building structures. Models can be constructed during Math Workshop to develop geometric and number sense principals. Student can work in groups engineering models of bridges, machines and devices that meet a whole group challenge. Students can then use these experiences to write stories and essays, or to conduct further research to improve upon their designs.

"Students remember 10% of what they hear...but 90% of what they do," rings true every day for me as an educator.

I cannot get students excited about STEM fields and concepts by having them read about bridge building or forces of energy. Instead, through kinesthetic activities involving Legos and K'Nex, students will learn and remember for a lifetime.
