I teach 8th Grade Science and Middle School Robotics and Engineering at a high-need, Title I middle school. My school is located in a high-poverty community, which affects the experiences and learning my students are exposed to. Almost 80% of the student population receives free or reduced lunch.
My students are growing up in a technology based society without the resources and exposure due to their economic/social status.
My goal is to help mold them into twenty-first century thinkers that are ready for a technologically based world through STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and critical thinking activities. My students hunger for challenging concepts and curriculum that will expose them to learning that can better their life as adults. The exposure to engineering concepts in middle school can change my students' future for the better! My students deserve to have the same influential opportunities as students in more stable economic home environments.
My Project
In my robotics/engineering class, my students are very excited and engaged in their learning and want to become twenty-first century learners. I want to give them the necessary skills to be successful in school and in this tough, critical thinking based world. My students will be able to gain a foundation in physics principals and understanding the key foundational aspects that go into engineering. I hope to change my students' future by exposing them to engineering at an earlier age. My students need the hands-on engineering activities that will develop the skills to help them be successful in our ever changing world!
These resources will give my students the ability to gain STEM skills that will make them twenty-first century learners.
The K'Nex materials will give them the academic edge to be successful in school and in the real world. Through these activities and lessons, the students will gain an understanding of necessary knowledge that goes into building, forces, motion, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and more. Your help will ensure my students will have the opportunity to be an engineer!
