I work in an urban school district. The district is high poverty. There are 18 schools with 12,000 students. The primary objective is to prepare the city kids to achieve their higher education and career goals.
The school I work in is pre K-5th grades.
We challenge our students with a rigorous curriculum. My classroom is made up of various races and religions. We all work together to create the best learning environment for all. This is achieved through consistency, rules and boundaries, support and patience, and love and attention.
Most of the students come from low income families. The supplies that are being asked for are things we use every year in the classroom. They are games and activities to enhance and aid in learning. The activities will be used in centers for cooperative learning. The games emphasize letter identification and letter sounds. Young readers work very hard on beginning reading skills with letters and sounds. We will be working on letter identification by matching upper and lower case letter through a matching game. Colors correspond to letters and learners can practice making words. All these are things to while keeping learning fun!
