My Students

I teach wonderful and interesting children who have special learning needs in kindergarten, first and second grade. Data shows that play really IS the work of children, and it's how they learn best!. I'd love to add some really interesting things to our centers that would foster independence, social-emotional learning, and creativity.

Learning to work cooperatively, taking turns, making sure everyone is included, and dividing up responsibility equally while playing and creating are all necessary lifelong skills that my students need to practice everyday.

My Project

Learning Easily Gets Optimized with LEGO! LEGO building should be a part of every student's childhood. Kids love building with LEGOS because the simple bricks are really open-ended tools for learning, cleverly disguised as toys.

In my class of children with special needs, using the LEGO set "Build Me Emotions" with characters that have specific facial expressions would allow me to reach those students on the ASD spectrum in a deeper and more meaningful way as they navigate towards independently identifying their own emotional state.

Common Core State Standards for science and math are covered via the simple machines set, and the LEGO set that contain extra windows, doors, etc would expand the simple pack we now own. Finally, the community mini-fig set is perfect for expanding my Kinder, 1st, and 2nd graders' knowledge of the world around them.
