The J. R. T, Library is the hub of our school. Before each school day even begins we have over 100 students in the library, meeting with friends, finishing up homework, and preparing for their day. Throughout the school day, students come to the library with their classes, for study halls, lunches, or academic extension. Representing 34 different countries and speaking 30 different languages, we are very proud of our diverse students and the culture they bring to our school.
The field of computer science is growing at a rate faster than any other occupation in the U.S.
In order for our students to be future ready, access to advanced computer tools is essential. We work closely with our computer science teacher, instructional learning coach, and 3 computer science clubs to expose all of our students to the field of computer science; providing them with the opportunity to design and utilize computer programming software. We look forward to taking our computer science programs to the next level; having students create tangible products for real-world applications. A 3D printer in the library will allow all of our students access to technology of the future.
My Project
All teachers and students will have access to the 3D printer located in the library. Teachers may have students use computer coding programs, such as Scratch, to design 3D structures and then bring students to the library to print their design. For example, a Foods and Wellness class may design cookie cutters using computer programming software, print their design using the 3D printer, and then use the cookie cutters to make cookies. In our current virtual learning environment, students may work on design and programming aspects at home and submit these files to their teacher to be printed using the new 3D printer. Products could then be picked up by students.
