My students need an iPad Mini with a keyboard and a Sphero SPRK+ to help them inspire curiosity, creativity, and invention through connected play and coding. This will allow them to easily learn programming.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is an urban, culturally diverse dual language (English/Spanish) School with over 75% Free and Reduced Lunch eligible students. Many of them come from homes with no internet or computer access outside of a cell phone. We are in our second year as a 21st Century after school program where I service students from grades 5-8. These students are bright, energetic, engaging, and thirsty for knowledge. They enjoy technology and thrive on knowledge. They are here after school for 12.5 hours a week most weeks as part of my program.
I see STEM as a large factor in the success of our students beyond the classrooms and into adulthood.
I would like to teach coding to the students in a way that is meaningful and engaging to them on a modern platform that is familiar to them. They would absolutely love to expand their knowledge through the use of iPads.
My Project
I would like to introduce coding to the students. Beyond the specific coding skill, students also learn to think logically, learn to work through a task, learn to check their work in detail, learn to persevere, learn to work collaboratively in a team, and it promotes creativity as there are endless ways to code a solution to a problem. Most of these key attributes are hard to teach in a traditional classroom curriculum, yet are essential in the real world. By providing an iPad and Sphero SPRK+, they can learn coding through robotics and play. They can use it along with the Lightning Lab app on the iPad to easily learn programming, complete hands-on activities, and share their creations with the community. The only limit is their imagination.
