Learning Code & Engineering Through Tinkering

Help me give my students a chance to learn computer programming on devices they won't be getting for Christmas. I want to help bridge the gap and give opportunities to tinker when they're not happening at home.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My scholars live on the outskirts of Phoenix in a high-poverty area. I have taught geometry without compasses and scrambled around on the day of an AP test to pull together enough calculators for every student to have one. With a median family income of half that of nearby schools, our classroom supplies tend to run low and any additional support goes a long way.

Our Girls Who Code program is still finding its feet, but I am so excited about helping these girls find a passion for code, problem solving, and design through the projects we'll engage in next year.

My Project

There are tons of online resources for students to play around and learn the basics of code, but I've found far fewer ways to get hands on wires and hardware. The Raspberry Pi is an amazing device that facilitates hands-on exploration and "tinkering" with the insides and outsides of computers, without fear of ruining an expensive piece of hardware.

Students will build, take apart, rebuild, break, and fix their own DIY hardware projects, learning the joy of engineering by choosing their own projects and pursuing their own ideas.

In this "free to play" environment, I'm so excited to see what comes out of their work.
