This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are an innovation school this year. This means that our school has been given a chance to provide even more meaningful opportunities to the students in our boundaries. Students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch. I have a classroom of fourth grade students that range in all different ability levels. Our school is also a Project Restore School. Each week students take math tests and are also assessed on reading skills. Both are cumulative and rigorous, which means skills cannot be forgotten and are always practiced.
My Project
Coming to school hungry is not how a student should start his/her day. Many of my students miss breakfast at home or school and can't focus in class because they are hungry. Sometimes, my students just need something to settle their stomach until lunch or dinner. I want my students focused on academics instead of thinking about what they can eat next. I try to provide fruit snacks or juice boxes as rewards in class as well for achievement. My students appreciate these items more than toys or other prizes.
Having snacks and juice pouches in my room can help students who are hungry get something in their stomach so academics are the priority instead of their growling belly.
An empty stomach is not what any student should be worried about in school.
