My students need a cassette player to learn the second language by listening to stories, and a new rug because the one that we have is old and dirty.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are missing a tool to aid them in learning and developing second language since we don't have a listening center. A classroom rug is essential to our everyday routine. Our rug is old and smelly due to the fact that it has not been properly cleaned, especially after many accidents.
They attend a school in an urban neighborhood in NYC where poverty is very common.
I am reaching out to you because the resources are limited. My class consists of 21 Spanish speaking kindergarten students who are eager to learn. Although they don't hit every note, they enjoy to sing on the top of their lungs. In addition, they love to hear stories and participate every chance they can. Every child brings something different to class whether it is the boy who is always helping my students academically or that girl who is always comforting a student. However, as whole they all have a passion for learning and are willing to try their best. We might not have all the materials necessary but they strive to learn everyday. It is their persistent motivation that inspires me everyday and to reach out to donors.
My Project
We use the classroom rug multiple times a day from the morning meeting to day wrap up where I explain the homework for the day. A new rug will make the students feel more comfortable since it will be accident-free. We have already had two accidents this year which is unsanitary for the students. The specific rug, I asked for has designated squares which eliminates squabbles over personal space. During my teaching of the mini-lesson, the students sit in the rug to be able to hear and see the big books. They are able to focus and participate more. In addition to the rug, a listening center is a very important component of literacy. It allows them to hear stories and develop oral language. Two students are allowed to go to the listening center to choose a story we have read and listen to it. Afterward, the students will discuss the story such as their favorite part and to expand their comprehension. Since, they are second language learners, this center will enhance their learning.
Kindergarten is the base of their future education so it is crucial for them to master the four language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
The academic years to come will be challenging especially if a student does not become proficient in the language. The rug and listening center will promote their learning and make it easier for them to learn the language. In the long run, they will be able to handle the next grade with ease since they will be skilled in language.
