I am so excited to be working in a "lab-type" school. A lab school is a place where current educational research ideas can be explored, tried, and iterated before disseminating new programs to the district. This year the school will be focused on goal setting, project-based learning, competency-based grading and building community mentorships. Last year's Fifth-grade students applied to be part of this class, and we will be working with approximately 20 Sixth graders in the 19-20 school year. In addition to the students in our classroom, we are willing and able to collaborate with the other three programs on our campus.
Observing students of the past, our team noticed the level of engagement, collaboration, and creativity that exploded when students were given hands-on tasks asking them to construct a solution to a problem.
These are the types of real-world tasks that create learners who are excited about what they are working on and help them to see a connection to their world. When our students leave this school it is our hope that we have prepared the thinkers, creators, and innovators that will lead this country into the future.
My Project
My co-teacher and I have observed the difference hands-on learning has in our classroom. The level of engagement, excitement and self-propelled learning that happens when students are given materials and a problem to solve is not something that can be recreated in a text or even an online simulation. We are asking for various Maker's Space materials that will be used to solve teacher and student-driven problems. Students will uses these items in our dedicated Maker's Space time, our Passion Project time, and they will be available always for our creative kids to enhance their regular classroom work.
Maker's Space materials allow students who may struggle in the traditional sense of school to tap into their strengths and become leaders in the room.
For example, using cardboard cutters and cardboard screws, allow kinesthetic learners to shine. Circuitry and coding materials will inspire budding engineers and the vinyl pieces we've requested will allow students to create real products on our classroom Silhouette machine.
Some of our biggest success stories as teachers have come from allowing students the freedom to create, problem-solve and guide their own learning based on a passion for what they are doing. The materials above, coupled with some we have already secured, will create a learning buffet of items for students to select to develop answers or promote ideas that will benefit their classroom, school, and community.
