Learning, Art, and Fun

Help me give my students school, art, and dance supplies. We need pencils, sharpeners and dry erase boards for class. We also need supplies to decorate for our dances, and puzzles for an autistic student.

My Students

Our class is an Adult Transition Class serving students between the ages of 18 and 22 years. These kids have developmental disabilities, including down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and other cognitive and physical challenges. Our students are learning vocational and independent living skills in order to prepare them for life after high school.

Students practice skills such as interviewing for a job, filling out job applications, cooking meals, doing laundry, and managing their time and money.

In addition, each of my students participates in supported employment and works two to three days per week at local businesses as part of their education.

Our goal is to help students become happy, confident, independent, contributing members of their communities! We also hope to change the misconceptions that many people have about people with disabilities. We believe that the world is a much better place because of our kids!

My Project

We are in need of some basic classroom materials, some supplies to decorate for our dances, and some puzzles for an autistic student.

We are looking for a mix of supplies to help students academically, socially, and recreationally.

Academically we are asking for pencils and sharpeners for paper work and dry erase boards and supplies for calculations and spelling. We are also asking for visual timers, which are very helpful to students with difficulty transitioning from one task to the next.

Socially, we need supplies to help us decorate for our annual dances. We hold four dances a year for both current and former students. We average approximately 50 special needs students and young adults at these functions. We are in need of table covers and art supplies to decorate.

Recreationally, we are looking for a Bingo set and some puzzles. We call Bingo for senior citizens at an area nursing home, and it would be good for our students to practice calling out and finding numbers beforehand. If we have our own Bingo set, we can practice and have fun. In addition, we need some puzzles for our room. We have several students with autism who enjoy puzzles during break time and as an activity to calm themselves when they are overstimulated. Our current puzzles have been around a long time and are missing some pieces.

I recognize that this is a hodgepodge of miscellaneous requests. However, in some areas there were only a couple of items, so we decided to put them all together into one request.
