My Students

There are 22 students in my 5th grade class. The students in my class receive free and reduced lunch. They are eager learners despite their differing learning leave and modalities. In reading and math their levels of learning ranges from Below Basic to Basic, with just a few ranging mid-grade level or above. They like working on computers and in centers with a lot of hands on and discovery learning focusing on cognitive/higher order thinking for all subject areas. We are learning through a method of Guided Instruction, with individual practice (which is a quiet focus of whole group learning), then we have centers where they collaborate within small groups. We like manipulatives in both reading and math, which promotes rigor as they learn. However, we use manipulatives for independent learning. Learning is much so much easier and fun when we have multiple resources to assist in the learning process.

My Project

I will use these items in conjunction with curriculum guides, extra practice, center activities and independent learning. As students' work on an assignment, they can have concrete models to check their assignments. As a professor, I can model assignments to demonstrate the processes to be successful in their answers. Also, the books will be great for science and the learning of text features/structures. The practice journal for writing will help with focusing on the different writing forms; narrative, informational, opinion, and persuasive. We are at the half way mark to the end of the school year before they move on to middle school. The goal is to build their writing stimuli. I also requested for the math journals to constantly review their basic skills so these skills don't weaken. The science books cover what we are currently covering in the curriculum guide. It also allows for cross curriculum teaching between science and ELA. Lastly, the headphones will assist with independent computer activities to make sure the students are focused.
